Belle Isle, an island park in the Detroit River, is the setting here, and this view follows the main canal past a bandstand where concerts drew crowds on summer evenings. The city acquired the island in the late 1870s and hired landscape designers to shape its lagoons, drives and open lawns into a public retreat for city residents. This glass negative dates from roughly 1900 to 1910, when the Detroit Publishing Company was photographing the city and its parks for sale as views of American places. The camera captures the formal, leisurely character that made the island a popular place to stroll, sit by the water and listen to music.
