The fern-filled interior of the conservatory on Belle Isle, the island park in the Detroit River, sets this view apart from the city street scenes in the collection. The glasshouse was built as a public greenhouse for the park, and its tropical and fern collections gave Detroit residents a warm, green refuge in winter. The Detroit Publishing Company, which sold views of American cities and landscapes in the early 1900s, made many such images of civic buildings and parks. The glass negative, with its fine detail in the foliage, shows how photographers of the period recorded the glass roofs, iron framing and crowded plantings of a showpiece public space.
