Few places in Detroit's public parks show the glasshouse side of city life as clearly as the conservatory on Belle Isle, the island park in the Detroit River. This view looks inside the building, where rows of potted plants and foliage fill the space beneath the glass roof. The conservatory was a gift to the city from Anna Scripps Whitcomb, and it drew visitors who crossed to the island by ferry. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this 8 by 10 inch glass negative around 1905, produced many views of the city's parks and streets, and this interior offers a useful record of how the island presented itself to the public at the time.
