Belle Isle, an island park in the Detroit River, was a favorite summer destination for the city's residents, and this view shows the Detroit Boat Club on its shore with a motorboat tied up nearby. Boat clubs of this kind were part of a broader turn-of-the-century habit of spending leisure time on the water, whether rowing, sailing, or, as here, running newer gasoline-powered launches. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this glass-plate negative between 1900 and 1910, documented many such scenes of American cities and resorts for sale to tourists and publishers. The mix of clubhouse, lawn, and motorboat offers a useful glimpse of how recreation on the river was changing.
