The Detroit Boat Club stood on Belle Isle, the island park in the Detroit River that the city had turned into a public recreation ground by the late 1870s. Its clubhouse drew rowers, canoeists and sailors to the river's calm channels, and boat clubs like this one were a common sight on the island as urban residents sought open water and fresh air. This view survives as an 8 by 10 inch glass plate negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that documented American cities and landscapes in the years around 1900 for travel and commercial sale. Its record places it between 1900 and 1910, a period when Belle Isle was among the city's most popular leisure grounds.
