Belle Isle, the island park in the Detroit River, is the setting for this view of a concert held on Children's Day in June 1902. The crowd of children and grown-ups gathered for the program is what sets this scene apart from the park's many landscape views. The picture comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers documented the city and its parks in large-format glass negatives like this 8 x 10 inch plate. Belle Isle had become one of Detroit's main public gathering places by the turn of the century, so the image also records how the city used its green spaces for shared civic events.
