The vessel in this view is the *Don Juan de Austria*, a steamer chartered for an outing by Parke, Davis & Company, the Detroit pharmaceutical firm whose employees made excursions like this one. The picture looks upriver from the Belle Isle Bridge, which connected the city to the island park in the Detroit River, so the scene shows the river traffic that workers and families shared with the city's leisure seekers. The glass dry plate was part of the Detroit Publishing Company's large body of views of American cities and waterways, made in the years before 1915. Note how the river and the crowded decks give a sense of an early-twentieth-century company outing.
