Belle Isle, the island park in the Detroit River, is the focus of this view, and automobiles are among the visitors along its waterfront. The Detroit Publishing Company made this glass negative between 1905 and 1915, when it was documenting the city and selling its views as postcards and booklets. Cars were still a novelty on American roads then, so their presence in a riverside park hints at how quickly Detroit's wealthier residents embraced them. The island had been set aside as a public park in the late 1800s and drew families and carriage drivers long before motorcars arrived.
