Belle Isle, the island park in the Detroit River, is the setting here, and the lily pond on it is the focus of this 8 x 10 inch glass negative. The Detroit Publishing Company, which operated from the 1890s into the 1920s, produced many views of American parks and resorts, and this one was likely made between 1900 and 1910, when Belle Isle was becoming a showpiece of the city's park system. Designed landscapes like this pond, with water plants and paths for strollers, reflected a popular belief that well-kept public grounds offered urban residents restful, healthful escape. The negative's catalog number and the later transparency copies show how the company circulated its images to buyers.
