Belle Isle Park, a island park in the Detroit River, is the setting for this view of its aquarium, a building that drew crowds to the park in the early 1900s. The aquarium opened in 1904 and was among the earliest public aquariums in the United States. The picture comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm that photographed American cities, scenery, and public buildings from the 1890s into the 1920s, and this 8 x 10 inch glass dry plate negative shows the kind of large-format work the company used to sell views to a national market.
