Two glass negatives of the aquarium on Belle Isle, the island park in the Detroit River, capture a building that drew city visitors to the island in the early 1900s. The aquarium opened in 1904 and was among the first public aquariums in the United States, displaying freshwater fish and other aquatic life to families who came to the park for an outing. The Detroit Publishing Company made views like these to promote the city's parks and attractions, and its images were widely sold as postcards and prints. These 8 by 10 inch plates were later donated to the State Historical Society of Colorado, which helps explain how the collection came to the Library of Congress.
