The original title gives the owner's initials as "F. W." (marked *sic*), but the subject headings name Frederick M. Alger, a member of the prominent Alger family of Michigan. This 8 by 10 inch glass negative records his Detroit residence and the street in front of it. The Detroit Publishing Company, which documented the city's streets, buildings and neighborhoods in the early twentieth century, made many views like it. Taken between about 1900 and 1920, the photograph offers a useful record of how prosperous households looked in the city's residential districts during those years.
