The record names only the owner, L.H. Jones, and the city, but this glass plate negative captures his Detroit residence sometime between 1900 and 1910. The Detroit Publishing Company, which recorded cities, resorts, and landscapes across the United States, made the image, and the firm later sold its views as photochrom and other printed reproductions. Detroit was expanding quickly in these years, and the automobile industry would soon reshape its neighborhoods, so a record of a single family's home from this period offers a glimpse of residential life before that change. The negative came to the collection as a gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado in 1949.
