The house of Charles M. Swift in Grosse Pointe, then a set of lakeside villages on the northeast edge of Detroit, is the subject of this view, recorded in the Detroit Publishing Company's glass-negative files. The company photographed American cities, resorts and country estates in the early 1900s, and its pictures often show how prosperous families built and presented their homes outside the city's core. Grosse Pointe grew during these years as Detroit's industrial wealth moved toward the lake, and houses like this one reflect that shift. The negative is a large 8 by 10 inch plate, which gave the company's photographers sharp detail in architecture and grounds.
