The record offers little about the household at 850 Jefferson Avenue, but the address places the house on Detroit's east-west riverfront boulevard, where prosperous families built substantial residences in the early twentieth century. The picture is an 8 by 10 inch glass dry plate negative, made between about 1905 and 1915 by the Detroit Publishing Company, which recorded the city and much of the country in large-format views and photochrom prints. Because the negative survives, the house can be reproduced from the original plate rather than from a later copy.
