Parke-Davis and Company's laboratory stands on the Detroit River waterfront, a site the company's Detroit operations made known far beyond Michigan. Parke, Davis & Company was founded in Detroit in the 1860s and grew into one of the largest drug manufacturers in the country, and its research laboratories drew visitors and attention as pharmaceutical science advanced. This view is an 8 by 10 inch glass dry plate negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, which photographed the city and its industries in the years around 1900 to 1910. The image shows how closely industrial buildings and shipping were tied to the river at that time.
