Elliott, Taylor & Woolfenden was a dry goods house in Detroit, and this view shows the first floor of the store with its merchandise and fixtures on display. Dry goods stores of this era sold cloth, notions, and household goods under one roof, and they were a common feature of downtown commercial districts before specialized department stores became dominant. The negative is an 8 x 10 inch glass plate from the Detroit Publishing Company, which documented American cities and businesses in the early 1900s. Its large format captures fine detail in the shelving and goods, offering a useful record of how retail interiors were arranged at the time.
