Inside a Detroit dry goods store, a display of women's cloaks and suits is arranged around mannequins, a common way for department stores of the period to show off ready-to-wear clothing. The photograph records the firm of Elliott, Taylor, Woolfenden between 1905 and 1915, a stretch when Detroit was growing rapidly as a retail and manufacturing center. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this glass-plate negative, documented the city's streets, businesses and interiors on a large scale during these years. The view of the shop floor offers a glimpse of how fashionable outerwear was presented to customers in the early twentieth century.
