Elliott, Taylor, Woolfenden was a Detroit dry goods firm, and this view looks across the first-floor sales floor of its store, where fabrics, notions and other merchandise were sold across counters. The image is an 8 by 10 inch glass negative made by the Detroit Publishing Company, which documented the city and much of the country in the years around 1905 to 1915. Interiors like this one show how large mercantile houses were arranged before modern retail displays, with long aisles, heavy fixtures and staff working behind the counters.
