Mannequins stand among the merchandise in this view of the north aisle at Elliott, Taylor, Woolfenden, a Detroit dry goods store, and they show how retailers were beginning to dress figures in clothing rather than relying only on shelves and bolts of cloth. The picture dates from between 1905 and 1915, a period of fast growth in Detroit as the automobile industry drew workers and shoppers to the city. It is a glass negative made by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for its large-format views of American cities and landscapes, and it records a store interior of that era, with its long aisles and crowded displays.
