Few interiors from turn-of-the-century Detroit are as clearly documented as this view of the millinery trade at Elliott, Taylor, Woolfenden, a dry goods firm named in the record itself. Made on an 8 by 10 inch glass plate sometime between about 1905 and 1915, it captures a period when millinery was a major part of dry goods retail and women's hats were elaborate, carefully displayed goods. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made the picture, documented American cities and their businesses in great numbers during these years, so the image preserves both a particular store and the commercial character of the city at the time.
