This view looks down the first floor of Elliott, Taylor, Woolfenden, a Detroit dry goods business, photographed from the front of the store. The image survives as a pair of 8 x 10 inch glass dry plate negatives, two variants of the same scene, made for the Detroit Publishing Company between about 1905 and 1915. Interior views like this one record how large commercial floors were arranged in the early twentieth century, when dry goods houses sold cloth, notions and household textiles in crowded, open rooms. The company's wide-ranging work on American cities makes such street-level and shop-floor photographs a useful record of Detroit's commercial life.
