This 8 x 10 inch glass negative shows the Hotel Pontchartrain while it was still under construction in Detroit, with the building's framework and surrounding street caught in an unfinished state. The hotel was one of several large downtown hotels Detroit built in the early 1900s, when the city's growth in the automobile and manufacturing boom created demand for grand lodgings. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this negative around the title's suggested date of 1907, documented the city's streets, buildings and industry for commercial sale. Pictures of buildings at this stage are less common than finished views, so the image offers a useful record of how the structure rose.
