The house at 917 Jefferson Avenue, home of Henry M. Russel, is shown from the side, which gives a fuller sense of its shape and setting than a straight-on view would. Jefferson Avenue runs along the Detroit River and was known for substantial residences in the decades around 1900, when prosperous families built large houses there. The image is an 8 by 10 inch glass dry plate negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers recorded the city and its surroundings in the years before 1910.
