Two very different kinds of Detroit life meet in this view: on the left, the residence of David Whitney at the northwest corner of Woodward Avenue, and beside it the Detroit Athletic Club. Whitney made his fortune in lumber and was among the city's wealthiest men, and his house helped make Woodward a showcase of private wealth. The Detroit Publishing Company made this glass-plate negative around 1905 as part of its broad record of the city's streets and buildings. The scene is a reminder that the avenue was then as much a street of fine homes as of commerce.
