The residence of W.C. McMillan in Detroit is recorded on an 8 by 10 inch glass plate negative, a format the Detroit Publishing Company used for much of its architectural work. The company was known for its city views, and this image was likely cataloged for sale, with its date of about 1905 based on a 1906 catalog listing. In the early twentieth century, prosperous Detroit families built substantial homes along avenues such as Woodward, so the picture offers a glimpse of the domestic architecture of that period.
