Few places in the Detroit area drew as much attention from wealthy families around 1900 as the Grosse Pointe country club, and this view shows its clubhouse as it looked in the first decade of the twentieth century. Grosse Pointe lies along Lake St. Clair east of the city, and its shoreline estates and sporting clubs were becoming a favored retreat for the industrialists and professionals who made Detroit prosper. The Detroit Publishing Company made thousands of views like this one for promotion and sale, and its large 8 x 10 inch glass negatives captured fine architectural detail, including the building's massing and its grounds.
