Set on Belle Isle, the Detroit Boat Club was part of the island's recreational life after the city acquired it in 1879 and developed it into a public park. By the early 1900s, rowing and small-boat sailing drew members and families to the island's waterfront, and clubhouses like this one served as their social headquarters. The view was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that photographed Detroit and many other American places around 1900 and sold the views to the public. This large 8 x 10 inch glass negative records the building in fine detail.
