The Detroit Motor Boat Club is the subject of this view, shown from the front, and the building reflects the early-1900s enthusiasm for gasoline-powered launches and racing on the Detroit River. The Detroit Publishing Company, which operated from the 1890s into the 1920s, produced views like this one for sale as postcards and souvenir prints. Its large glass negative, about 6.5 by 8.5 inches, was later donated to the Library of Congress through the State Historical Society of Colorado in 1949. The clubhouse's front elevation shows how such social clubs presented themselves to the city's waterfront public.
