The veranda of the Detroit Boat Club is the focus here, rather than the boats or the water that usually draw attention to clubs of this kind. Boat clubs on the Detroit River were social as well as athletic institutions, and their porches and verandas were where members gathered after rowing or sailing and where families watched regattas. This view was made on a large 8 x 10 inch glass negative between about 1900 and 1910, when the Detroit Publishing Company was documenting the city's streets, buildings and waterfront for sale as picture postcards and prints. The clubhouse's wide porch and its relaxed, open layout show how riverfront life was organized at the time.
