Gladwin Park, also known as Water Works Park, sits beside the city's municipal water works, and this view shows a footbridge arching over one of its pavilions. The pairing of ornamental landscaping with working infrastructure was typical of American park design in the early twentieth century, when cities often placed recreation grounds near their utilities. The Detroit Publishing Company made this 8 by 10 inch glass negative between about 1900 and 1920, when the firm was recording American cities and scenic places for commercial sale. The negative's survival in the Library of Congress reflects the company's large body of Detroit views.
