A floral clock set into the flower beds of Water Works Park gives this view its particular interest: a timepiece built from living plants, with its hands and numerals laid out in bedding flowers. Public floral clocks like this were a popular feature of turn-of-the-century parks, where gardeners changed the planting by season and the display doubled as both a landmark and a horticultural showcase. The Detroit Publishing Company, which documented American cities and landscapes in this period, made the image on a large glass plate negative, so the sharp detail of the flowers and clock face survives.
