The tower at Water Works Park stands out as the engineered center of a park that grew up beside the city's water system. Elevated tanks like this one used gravity to hold pressure steady across the water mains, so the structure was a working utility as much as a landmark. This view is a dry plate glass negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that photographed American cities around 1900 to 1910 and sold the pictures as souvenir views and postcards. The company's large-format negatives capture the sharp detail of the period's industrial and civic architecture, including the way parkland and utility buildings were often designed to sit together.
