The view is taken from the water, looking toward the tower at Water Works Park, a shoreline site that let the city's pumping and water system sit in a public green space. Around 1900, many American cities built such towers and pumping stations as part of new municipal water systems, and parks were often laid out beside them so residents could enjoy the grounds. This print is a photochrom, a Swiss process that used multiple stone or metal plates to build up color, which gave the Detroit Publishing Company's views their painted, luminous look. The company made these prints to sell as souvenirs and to document cities for travelers.
