The lighthouse in this view stands in Palmer Park, a wooded green on Detroit's northwest side that was given to the city in the 1890s by Senator Thomas W. Palmer, which makes the picture a reminder of how the city's parks were built as places for leisure and civic pride. The photochrom process used here was a Swiss method that transferred photographs into full color through a series of stone lithographs, and the Detroit Photographic Company, later the Detroit Publishing Company, acquired its rights in the United States. Prints like this one were made for sale and for catalog albums, so they show how the company presented Detroit's scenery to a national audience around 1900.
