The log cabin in Palmer Park stands out among the Detroit Publishing Company's city views for its rustic design, which was a deliberate choice in turn-of-the-century park planning. Palmer Park, on the city's northwest side, was named for Thomas W. Palmer, the Detroit businessman and U.S. senator whose land became the park. Rustic log shelters and cabins like this one were popular in American parks of the period, where they suggested a natural retreat within the city. The Detroit Publishing Company, which issued photographs and color prints of Detroit and other places, made this 5 x 7 inch glass negative around 1905.
