Belle Isle, an island park in the Detroit River, provides the vantage point for this view looking back across the water toward the city. Detroit acquired the island in 1879, and landscape architects associated with the Olmsted firm helped shape it into a place for picnics, boating, and strolling. The Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm known for its large body of city and scenic views, made this 8 x 10 inch glass negative between about 1910 and 1920. The picture shows how the park offered a green retreat within sight of the industrial city.
