Belle Isle, the island park in the Detroit River, was reached from the city by a bridge that rose from East Jefferson Avenue, and this glass negative was made from that avenue looking out toward the island. The view records the approach to the bridge and the streets that led Detroiters to the park. Belle Isle was laid out as a public park in the late nineteenth century, so the bridge was the main link between the city and its green space. The Detroit Publishing Company, which documented many city scenes in these years, produced pictures like this one.
