Palmer Park, on Detroit's northwest side, was a place where rustic log cabins sat among its wooded grounds, and this view labels one as having "bedrooms," a reminder that these structures were built for living and sleeping as well as for show. The Detroit Publishing Company, which photographed the city and its surroundings around 1906, made many such views for sale to visitors and promotional use. Because it was made on an 8 x 10 inch glass plate, the negative captures fine detail of the cabin's construction and the surrounding landscape. The image offers a glimpse of how early twentieth-century Detroiters used their parks for recreation and retreat.
