Grand Circus Park sits at the heart of downtown Detroit, laid out as a formal public green where several major avenues meet in a wide circle of lawns and trees. This c1905 glass negative comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, the firm that produced a vast photographic survey of American cities and landscapes in the early twentieth century, and it captures the park as a showcase for a city then growing rapidly on the strength of its manufacturing. Parks of this kind were central to the City Beautiful planning ideas popular at the time, which treated well-ordered greenery and grand open spaces as signs of civic pride. The 8 x 10 inch plate also preserves the detail and tonal range that made the company's large-format work prized by collectors and researchers.
