A branch of the Dime Savings Bank stands at the corner of Broadway and Grand Circus Park, one of the central intersections of downtown Detroit. The Detroit Publishing Company, which documented American cities and landscapes in the early twentieth century, made this glass negative between about 1905 and 1915, a period when Detroit was growing quickly as an automobile and manufacturing center. Banks with classical facades and large street-level windows were a common feature of such commercial blocks, and the photograph records how the district looked as the city's business life expanded.
