Taken inside the main floor of the Dime Savings Bank in Detroit, this view shows a public banking hall from the years between 1900 and 1910, when banks were designed to look as solid as the money they kept. The Detroit Publishing Company made the picture on a glass negative of about 8 by 10 inches, and the firm later issued many such views as photochrom prints and postcards. Interiors like this, with high ceilings, stone or marble finishes and rows of teller windows, show how bank architecture was used to earn depositors' trust in a growing city.
