The lobby of the Dime Savings Bank in Detroit, Michigan, is the subject of this view, made on an 8 by 10 inch glass negative sometime between 1910 and 1920. It belongs to the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that documented the city and much of the country with large-format plates. Banking halls of this era were often built with marble, brass, and high ceilings to suggest permanence and public trust, and the design of such rooms was meant to reassure depositors. The negative later reached the Library of Congress through a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
