Grand Circus Park, at the junction of Woodward and Washington, anchors this view, and the Michigan Conservatory of Music stands at the left edge of the frame. The Detroit Publishing Company made the 8 by 10 inch glass negative around 1905, when the company was documenting American cities and landscapes for sale as postcards and printed views. The park's open lawns and the street lined with commercial and cultural buildings reflect Detroit's rapid growth in the early twentieth century. Those large negatives captured street scenes in fine detail, so the storefronts and streetcar traffic of the period remain legible today.
