This view of Library Park, at the corner of Gratiot Avenue and Farmer Street in downtown Detroit, is the right-hand half of a wider panorama, so the park itself appears only in part. The streetcar tracks and the busy commercial frontage show a city whose downtown ran on electric trolleys in the years before 1915. The Detroit Publishing Company, which issued views of American towns and cities from the 1890s into the 1920s, made the negative on a glass plate. Its wide format and attention to street life give a useful record of how a central Detroit intersection looked in the early twentieth century.
