Gratiot Avenue, where it meets Woodward in downtown Detroit, is the street this glass negative records, with streetcar tracks running down its middle. The Detroit Publishing Company made the plate sometime between 1900 and 1910, documenting the city in large 8 by 10 inch negatives. Electric streetcars were then the main way Detroiters got around, so the rails here show how much transit shaped street life. The Library of Congress holds the negative, which came to it as a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
