A glass negative records the interior of Mrs. C.L. Stephens's home at 1123 Woodward Avenue in Detroit, dated by the record to between 1905 and 1915. Woodward was one of the city's principal avenues, lined in those years with large residences, and the Detroit Publishing Company, which made the image, photographed both its streets and their houses for sale. Its 8 by 10 inch plates captured furnishings and rooms in fine detail, making the picture a useful record of domestic taste in the period. The negative reached the Library of Congress through the State Historical Society of Colorado, which received it as a gift in 1949.
