Woodward Avenue, the wide thoroughfare that runs north from the center of Detroit, is the subject here, with streetcar tracks running up the middle of the view past commercial buildings. The record describes two close variant glass negatives, each 8 by 10 inches, made by the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers documented the city and the wider country for views sold as prints and postcards around 1900. The scene shows a busy urban street in the first decade of the twentieth century, when electric streetcars were a central part of how people moved through the city.
