The William Livingstone Memorial Lighthouse stands on Belle Isle, the island park in the Detroit River, and it honors William Livingstone, a Detroit banker and longtime leader of the Great Lakes shipping industry. Built around 1930, it was a monument to the lake freighter trade as much as a navigation aid, and its white, classical form marks the island's shoreline for passing vessels. This print comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers documented American cities and landmarks in the early twentieth century, and its caption card dates the view to about 1930.
