Few railroad projects in the Midwest were as ambitious as the Michigan Central tunnel, which carried trains beneath the Detroit River toward Windsor, Ontario. Completed in 1910, the tunnel used electric locomotives, sparing passengers the smoke and fumes of steam engines in an enclosed passage. The Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm that documented American cities and rail lines in the early twentieth century, made this 8 by 10 inch glass negative between 1905 and 1915, recording the railroad tracks that led into the tunnel.
